My Experience: 8hrs Layover in Nairobi, Kenya

On a recent trip with Kenya Airways to Cape Town, South Africa, I seized the opportunity to visit Nairobi on 8hrs layover. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is conveniently located near the city center, making it feasible to explore Nairobi city and travel to and from the Airport within this 8hrs timeframe.

Whilst planning our a stop in Nairobi on a Kenya Airways connecting flight, ensure you have processed your Electronic Travel authorisation (eTA), which is required for all visitors to enter Kenya, except citizens of East African countries like Rwanda, Uganda, DRC, Burundi, South Sudan, and Tanzania. The eTA is a quick and easy online application and typically processed within 24 hours.

Itinerary for 8hrs layover in Nairobi

Take an Uber to KICC city center – Using ride apps such as Uber or Bolt is a cheaper option than airport taxi and this trip will cost less than $5. I was shocked at the price too. Use the highway, it is faster and a lovely scenery of the city. This route has a toll gate, hence a token for toll fare will be required.

Spend 1 hr at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) – KICC is 32-story building located in the City center of Nairobi, and is a crucial address for a number of Government offices but this is not the interesting part. The fun part of this building is the roof top. If you make your way to the roof top at the cost of $1, you will get a panoramic views of Nairobi city. How cool. On your way down the roof, you can learn about Kenya culture and history from the artworks displayed on the walls.

Have a stroll around the city square – Stroll around the city square to observe the daily lives of locals. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Have lunch at a lovely restaurant – We chose the pronto Restaurant, it is right cross the city square and offers delightful meals. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a good meal before continuing your adventure.

Visit the Masai Market – A 15-minute walk from the city square brings you to the Masai Market, where you can purchase beautiful, handcrafted souvenirs. This walk also allows you to experience more of Nairobi’s charm.

Take a ride back to the Airport – Take an Uber back to the airport in time for your connecting flight.

Staying Connected

Ever wondered about internet access for booking your rides? Nairobi has Wi-Fi in most public places like the airport, KICC, and restaurants. If you however are a prepared traveller and would want to ensure you have connectivity without relying on public wifi, you should get a 1 day esim from popular providers such as Holafly or Airalo
