Cruising Halong Bay: What Two Nights on the Water Is Actually Like

If you have cruised before, or read enough of these posts to be thinking about it, Halong Bay is a different proposition entirely. Smaller boat, calm water, and scenery you have almost certainly seen in photographs without knowing where it was.

What it looks like

Thousands of limestone islands rising straight out of green water, most of them uninhabited, many of them hollow with caves. The bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it looks exactly like the pictures, which is not something you can say about most famous places.

The boats are small. You are not on a floating city with theatres and water slides. You are on something closer to a private yacht, with a handful of cabins and a deck you can have to yourself at six in the morning.

What two nights actually gets you

One night is the standard offering and it is not enough. You board, eat, sleep, and leave.

Two nights means you go deeper into the bay, past where the day boats turn around. It means a full day of kayaking, cave visits and swimming rather than a rushed afternoon. And it means one uninterrupted morning where the water is still and there is nobody else in sight.

The bit people do not expect

It is quiet. Genuinely quiet, in a way that ocean cruising is not.

There is no engine noise once you anchor, no crowds, no schedule pulling you somewhere. People who arrive planning to catch up on emails end up sitting on deck doing nothing for three hours, which is usually the part they talk about afterwards.

Where it sits in a bigger trip

Halong Bay works best as part of something larger. Two nights is the right length, and then you want somewhere else to go.

Our October Asia tour puts it between Hanoi and Bangkok, with the cruise fully inclusive, before the trip moves on to Shanghai, Guangzhou and a Dubai stopover on the way home.
