The cruise fare is the number everyone looks at. But it’s not the number that catches people out. What catches people out is everything sitting quietly around the fare. Book without knowing those, and a trip you thought you could afford turns tight in the worst way, halfway through, far from home. So here is the honest breakdown, before you commit to anything.
What the fare usually covers
On most of our trips, the headline price already includes your flights from Lagos, your accommodation, guided tours in the port cities, and airport transfers. That is more than many cruise fares include, and it is worth knowing so you can compare like with like when you shop around.
What it does not, and you should budget for
The visa. Depending on the route, this can range from a modest fee to a real cost once you factor in appointments, travel to another city for biometrics, and time off to sort it. Start here, always.
Spending money in port. Excursions beyond the included tours, meals off the ship, shopping, tips. This is the one people underestimate most. A rough rule is to set aside a daily amount per person and be honest with yourself about your own habits.
Travel insurance. Get it. We would never let someone sail without it, because the one time you need it pays for every time you did not.
Onboard extras. Specialty restaurants, drink packages, the spa, wifi, the photos. Cruise lines make good money here precisely because it all feels small in the moment. Decide before you sail what you will and will not pay for.
Getting to the port before you sail. If your cruise leaves from Miami or Barcelona, you need to arrive the night before, so a hotel night and meals aren’t included in the fare.
The trick that makes all of it manageable
Pay the deposit, then spread the balance. Nearly all our trips let you pay over the months between booking and sailing, which turns one frightening number into something you barely notice leaving your account. It also means you book early, when visas are easiest, and the good cabins are still open.
