What Actually Happens at the Canton Fair
Ask around any Nigerian market and you will find people who buy goods that came through Guangzhou. Ask how many have been to the fair themselves and the number drops sharply. It is not usually about money. It is that nobody explains how the thing actually works. It is bigger than people picture
The Canton Fair is the largest trade fair in the world. Not the largest in China, the largest anywhere. It runs across an exhibition complex so big that walking it properly takes days, not hours. That scale is the first thing to understand, because it changes how you prepare. You do not wander in and browse. You go in knowing which halls you need.
It runs in phases, and the phases matter
The fair does not show everything at once. It splits into phases, each running a few days, each covering different product categories.
This is the single most important thing to get right. If your products are in one phase and you arrive during another, you have flown to Guangzhou to look at the wrong things. So confirm which phase covers your category before you book anything.
Our October trip covers Phase 1, and we arrange badges for the later phases for anyone extending their stay.
You need an invitation and a badge
You cannot walk in off the street. Entry requires registration in advance, which produces an invitation and a buyer badge.
The process is not difficult, but it takes time and it happens well before you travel, alongside your visa. Anyone organizing the trip for you should be handling both together.
Bring more than you think
Business cards, in quantity. You will hand out more in three days than you have in the past year.
A way to keep notes that is not your memory. Photograph stands, write down booth numbers, record what you discussed. By the second day everything starts to blur.
Comfortable shoes, which sounds trivial until you have walked eight hours on concrete. And a clear sense of your minimum order quantities and your budget, because negotiating on the spot without those numbers is how people commit to things they regret.
Go with a plan, not with hope
The buyers who come back with good suppliers are the ones who arrived knowing what they wanted, which halls to be in, and what they were willing to pay. The ones who come back disappointed are usually the ones who thought they would work it out when they got there.
Until the next port,
The Xplora Bliss Team
