Cotonou’s Record-Breaking Wall Mural

In the vibrant streets of Cotonou, Benin’s bustling coastal city, lies a hidden gem that captivates the imagination and stirs the soul, a remarkable feat of artistry and creativity – Africa’s longest wall mural.

We saw this wall mural whilst driving through town and it is super gorgeous. I absolutely agree the wall is a sort of outdoor museum as someone had referenced.

You should probably wonder which of the walls I am writing about because Cotonou has two walls, both of impressive scale of over 940 metres in length and gorgeous eye popping designs. The old wall mural guys is on only one side of the street and that’s the one that has won an award as Africa’s longest wall mural, but guess what! The second wall mural which is still under construction is taller and is on both sides of the street. I cannot wait to see what awards that will hold when it is finished.

As you drive or stroll along the length of the walls, you will be immersed in a visual journey through time, with each brushstroke telling a story of the nation’s colourful tapestry of history, culture, and heritage.

And you can feel the passion and dedication of the artists who brought the mural to life by mere look at the works.

Whether you are an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply a curious traveller, driving or walking through Cotonou’s iconic wall mural is an experience not to be missed, if you happen to visit the city.
